Why Dentists Tell You Not to Use a Straw After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Reviewed by Dr. Matthew Young, DDS

Reading time: three minutes

Many patients are advised to avoid using a straw after wisdom teeth removal but are not always sure when it is safe to start again. The timing depends on how the extraction site is healing and whether the blood clot protecting the socket has stabilized.

How Long Should You Avoid Straws After Wisdom Tooth Removal?

We recommend avoiding straws for at least the first week after wisdom tooth extraction. The suction created when drinking through a straw can disturb the blood clot that forms in the extraction site, which may increase the risk of dry socket.

Some patients may be advised to wait longer depending on the complexity of the extraction and how healing is progressing. If your surgeon provides specific instructions, those recommendations should take priority.

The Risks of Using a Straw Too Soon

After a tooth is removed, a blood clot forms within the socket and serves as the foundation for healing. This clot protects the underlying bone and nerves while new tissue develops.

The suction created by a straw can place pressure on the extraction site. If the blood clot becomes dislodged before healing progresses, the underlying bone and nerves may become exposed, leading to a painful condition known as dry socket.

The risk is highest during the first several days after surgery when the blood clot is still developing and stabilizing.

Signs the Extraction Site Is Healing Normally

Healing timelines vary from person to person, but normal signs of recovery often include:

  • Gradually improving discomfort
  • Reduced swelling over several days
  • Formation of new tissue within the extraction site
  • Less sensitivity around the socket as healing progresses

Most patients can resume using a straw about one week after wisdom tooth extraction, provided healing is progressing normally and their dentist has not recommended a longer restriction period. Even when the area feels better, the extraction site may still be healing beneath the surface, so it is important to follow your dentist’s postoperative instructions.

Things to Keep in Mind During Recovery

Avoiding straws is only one part of protecting the extraction site while it heals. It’s important to follow your postoperative instructions and make careful food and beverage choices that can help reduce irritation and support normal healing.

During the first several days after extraction, it is generally recommended to:

  • Drink directly from a cup
  • Stay well hydrated with water and other non-carbonated beverages
  • Choose soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, smoothies eaten with a spoon, scrambled eggs, and soup that is not excessively hot
  • Avoid crunchy, hard, spicy, or sticky foods that may irritate the extraction site
  • Avoid alcohol while healing and while taking prescribed medications
  • Chew on the opposite side of the mouth when possible

As healing progresses, most patients can gradually return to their normal diet.

FAQs

What happens if I accidentally use a straw after wisdom tooth extraction?

Using a straw once does not automatically cause dry socket. However, repeated suction during the early stages of healing may increase the risk of dislodging the blood clot.

Can I use a straw 5 days after wisdom tooth removal?

Many patients are still advised to avoid straws at five days because the extraction site is continuing to heal. Follow the timeline provided by your dentist or oral surgeon.

Is dry socket common after wisdom tooth extraction?

Dry socket is one of the more common complications following tooth extraction, but most patients heal normally when postoperative instructions are followed carefully.
